Phase-field modelling of paramagnetic austenite–ferromagnetic martensite transformation coupled with mechanics and micromagnetics

A three-dimensional phase-field model is proposed for simulating the magnetic martensitic phase transformation. The considers a paramagnetic cubic austenite to ferromagnetic tetragonal martensite transition, as it occurs in Heusler alloys like Ni2MnGa, and based on Landau 2-3-4 polynomial with temperature dependent coefficients. paramagnetic–ferromagnetic transition recaptured by interpolating micromagnetic energy function of order parameter ferroelastic domains. numerically implemented real space finite element (FE) method. FE simulations state show that capable correctly recapture -magnetic microstructures, well influence external stimuli. Simulation results indicate shifts towards higher temperatures when field or compressive stress applied. dependence shift strength stimulus uncovered well. magnetocaloric materials high interest development energy-efficient cooling devices.

A Phase Transformation Model for the Austenitisation of Martensite in Dual-Phase Steel

This work presents a unique approach for the modelling of the austenitisation of martensite in dual-phase steels within the phase-field method. Driving forces for nucleation and growth are derived from thermodynamic databases. Routines for nucleation are based on a discretisation of the classical nucleation theory. Validation is given via dilatometric experiments.
